Repainting Thunder 1? Empty Repainting Thunder 1?

Post by KaylaS96 Tue Apr 07, 2015 5:41 pm

Hey there,

A guy in my church just gave me a Westone Thunder 1 bass that he's had packed away for a while, and as you can probably imagine, it has a few issues. (not too big, just needs new strings, rust on a few areas, the musty smell, and the like) I'm not a big fan of the finish on it, though. I can live with it, but I'd rather re-paint or stain it. I was doing some research on the bass, though, and it seems that the Thunder 1 might be somewhat rare these days...? Anyway, I'm not worried about getting money for this later on IF I ever want to sell it, but I was kind of concerned: will stripping it and re-finishing it really devalue the instrument? Will it be okay if I do it, or is it really not going to turn out well in the end? I'd appreciate any thoughts. Smile

And as a side note, if I re-finish this, is there a certain kind of stain or paint that I'm supposed to use or that would work better?

Thanks!

Thunder 1  basses are not rare in the slightest,  very popular actually.
Is it the natural finish or a solid colour gloss?

Have a look at my 6 string refinishes here

These are simple sand, mask, stain and oil jobs.

Okay, good to know.
It's black, but with a natural stripe down the middle of the bass, about the width of the neck.

Great, thanks!

I'm not a big fan of black guitars in general, but the thunder black with maple is really appealing!

Post some pics when you're allowed, we all love pics here Smile

Yeah, my electric guitar is black, so that doesn't really bother me. I do think the natural looks a little weird, though, because it kind of has a little yellowish tint to it for some reason. The main thing that bothers me is that it has some scratches - which isn't too big of a deal, but it would be nice to get rid of them - and it has some stuff stuck on it in various places.

Cool, I just might do that! Smile

I'm doing a restoration on a thunder 1 as we speak so any obstacles I come across and save you the same pain, I'll share them. Good luck
