Marlin Sidewinder
I know these have a crap reputation, but my ebay finger is twitching to give one TLC if I can get it at a low price.
Anyone out there who succumbed to Marlins in the 80's and didn't regret it?

There's no smoke without fire Dan, got one cheap a few years back, plywood body, loose neck pocket, bad tuners and a truss rod that wouldnt tighten enough......awful.

Re: Marlin Sidewinder
Apparently they were local (to me), being distributed from Newport..

From 1986 the Marlins were made in Korea, and distributed across the United Kingdom by British Music Strings Ltd, Bedwas House Industrial Estate, Newport, Gwen

Good idea!
Look out for the early made in India Sunn Mustang strat, similar price range as the Marlin but much much better.

Funny you should say that. I bought an Indian Sunn Mustang in 80's. It was very heavy and solid, good resonance but poor electrics and pups. It went to a charity shop eventually. You are the first I've heard to suggest they were OK.

Re: Marlin Sidewinder
Yes the electrics aren't the best, but those "tallboy" style pickups sound great to me.
Better than any Squier I've played for sure.

There's lots of great things said about the India mustangs online.

The later shaped 2 and 3 are, but the early 2's are on par.

Re: Marlin Sidewinder
Grabbed a few around £150 mark a couple of years ago.
Even some Affinity Strats are very decent(nice necks) just change the pups/pots and saddles/nut and you'll have a good sounding Strat for peanuts.. you don't need to spend a lot.

I have a Squier Bullet from the mid 90's, really playable, amazing neck, cost £50. You might also want to check out the Vester Tradition Strats, great guitars for the money.
