Neck heavy Mats guitars Empty Neck heavy Mats guitars

When I got my Vantage Entertainar some years ago and restored her, I was a happy dude!

Wonderful guitar, and very beautiful to boot. I did post at that time about the fact that she was, unfortunately, quite neck heavy which made stand up playing a challenge

I recently picked up another Vantage, a VP710 this time.

Again, a fantastic guitar, and also beautiful. But again, she's neck heavy, something I didn't realize until I finally put a strap on her.

So, the question to the choir is, "what do you do?" Is this a question of changing the strap pin location, something I'd prefer not to do since it means drilling more holes, especially in the VP since it's a set neck. Other than swinging a counter weight off the bottom pin or using a bass strap (ugh!), has anyone got a remedy for nose diving guitars?

Wow!  Shocked

Thanks (I think).
I spend so much of my time at the shop troubleshooting "humming" issues caused by bad grounding problems, that I could not imagine deliberately stuffing metal BB's into the electronics control cavity!

Wow!

A "another" school of thought

A suede strap seems to be favoured by a lot of SG players too.......

Thanks again Si, 'preciate the info. The Heads Up idea looks interesting, however, they appear to be out of business. At least their site domain is for sale.  Neutral

I think one of the boyz on the Mats site recommended some time ago the do something similar by way of a small weighted bag wrapped around the strap with a Velcro type closure. Not as neat and tidy as the Heads Up design but I suppose it would work.

Adding more weight to a guitar is always problematic if you are standing for any length of time though. Looks like the simplest solution might be a suede strap.

Don't seem to have this problem with the Westones, only some Vantage models.

Neck heavy Mats guitars Empty A DIY Solution?

Post by Barry Tue Aug 19, 2014 11:02 am

I may have found a solution.

This bass player seems to have hit on an idea that could work. Mind you he's dealing in much heavier weights than would likely be required for guitars, but the approach is a good one methinks.

The video is perhaps easier to follow than the text explanation, dude has a tendency to ramble on a bit at the start though. He gets into the "how to" at about the 4:40 mark. And there are some closeup shots of the final product at the end.

Good find, I like his approach and it is ultimately very affordable and does not effect the instrument in any way. Might have a go at making one of those for my Futurama bass, it's certainly a lot more dignified than currently dragging a brick on some string off the rear strap button  No

As an SG owner, I can testify to the suede strap.  Works just great.

That would bother the hell out of me too. Just as distracting as the neck diving.  Neutral
