Pretty standard affair
Thanks to Catalyst for a nice little trade, this thing has more balls than Buster Gonad.
Spent yesterday tidying it up, a severe fret polishing and filling lots of chips on the edge of the fretboard, Trying out a pair of Wilkinson WHZ pups....which sounded awful at first....ahem...until I sorted my wiring out...

My first Westbury, what a beautifully made instrument, so solid and it set up so slick, 1.3mm at 12th fret

My bad camera technique doesn't show the big chip in the neck, repaired with my usual felt pen and superglue, but I changed glue brand and it turned the brown pen green! hey ho, cant feel it which was the point, so all the chips have been done uncolored.

Great Score Sarge!!
I have about a half dozen of these. They are great guitars. Weight is not consistent with them. Some are heavy some are fairly light. All play fantastically well and sound great except when I play them.

is there any way to date them hoax? I think \i read somewhere that the unlaminated necks are the late 70's.

Re: Pretty standard affair
I will need to check Sarge but I think that all of mine have typical Mats laminate necks.
I will have a look tomorrow and get back. There is info on them on the Univox forum.
You won't want to flip that thing any time soon. What did you trade for it?

Re: Pretty standard affair
Just checked the necks. Two are definitely laminated. The others, I can't tell due to the finish but I suspect that they may be one piece with little wings on the headstock.

Thanks Graham, this is also a one piece with wings, the neck really is a perfect fit for my hand.
No markings or numbers anywhere on this, nothing under the neck pup other than a big-ass screw.

Re: Pretty standard affair
They're just Wilkinson pups, not great, hot but not great.
I'm looking out for another pair of PAF's.....can't bring myself to take mine out of my Spectrum ST.....just sound too good in that axe.
might be worthwhile getting a beat up Hondo with them in, probably for less than a pair on ebay!

Re: Pretty standard affair
and here's the trade.....
talk about black!...not seen a Thunder Jet bass in person before, everything, bar the frets and strings, is black....pictures don't really do it justice but it looks amazingly cool...
sounds great, just like my Thunder 1, and really easy and comfortable to play....plus it will sit great next to my Jet lead....
picked this up couple of weeks ago for £51...including amp, soft case, 2 cables and stand....
I'll post some more pics when I've had chance to give them a bit of spit and polish.
Much obliged Sarge, I think the trade worked well for both of us.

I think you're right, everyone a winner
looks and feels mean and moody with the dull finish, also feels more substantial than the light oak thunder 1 bass from memory.

Re: Pretty standard affair
any ideas how I keep the dull finish looking dull?
I would imagine that even an original dull finish will buff up naturally due to normal use over time?
on the six string Jet it looks like someone started to polish/clean it...realised it affected the matte finish and stopped as it seems almost glossy in one particular area. Would it be possible to remove said polish and return it to its dull roots?
I guess this would be a bit trickier if he had used a silicone based cleaner although I wouldn't have thought it would penetrate the finish on a Mats so may come off with some meths mebbee??
What do you guys generally use to clean/polish your instruments?
Feel free to move this over to technical if you feel its getting technical...

Re: Pretty standard affair
I don't think you can return it to it's natural dullness. Once it's buffed it makes it shiny because it's a texture issue, it flattens it out so the light reflects differently.

Re: Pretty standard affair
Matte or satin finishes are fairly sensitive, especially on acoustics. They can quickly soak up body sweat from a forearm or a hand and close up the tiny crevices/pores in the wood surface. I often see the lower bout of "shredder" guitars present as all shiny against the rest of the black matte finish. Same thing on satin finished acoustics of all kinds.
The general wisdom dictates cleaning with a warm damp cloth (mild sudsy if needed). Followed immediately with a dry towel. Absolutely no cleaner or polish. The idea is to flush out the dirt and restore the dullness. If left to the point of shininess however it could be too late.

Re: Pretty standard affair
thanks guys.....is there anything to be gained by giving it a wipe down with meths just to remove any polish residue that might have been applied?
Its 30 years old and I'm surprised it hasn't been buffed to within an inch of its life already...
If all else fails, whats the best to do...polish it all to bring it up to a universal level of shine?...half matte with shiny patches looks a bit of a mess, although having said that...most of my guitars do anyway
If i'm a'polishing...whats the best type to use...i've heard numerous different methods?
Once again, thanks for your help

Re: Pretty standard affair
I don't think it'll ever have a full deep gloss, I may be wrong but I think they used a matte lacquer.
meths, naptha and acetone will all clean it and have no problems.
you could take some fine wet/dry paper to it to get it matte, but it won't be great and will leave it open to every fingerprint.

Re: Pretty standard affair
not bothered about a full gloss finish....my top priority (if even possible) would be to take it back to its original finish, but it sounds like it could be too late.
I have a friend who is a french polisher..maybe he could offer some advice from his perspective..
Maybe he could remove its current finish and reapply the matte lacquer?....sounds easy enough to me...

Re: Pretty standard affair
If it gets used it's gonna shine up regardless.
Unless you want a museum piece.
Make up a bicarb/baking soda paste and rub the gloss with a cloth. Don't worry it won't harm it.

Re: Pretty standard affair
Thanks Westbone, tried the paste idea and it did the job...
The guitar is now shined up where you would expect it to through normal use, but the glossy polish applied by the previous owner has now gone.
It now looks like a good, honest guitar - which is how I like 'em
If they are too perfect they stay in their case...just ask my Aria FS1000, can't remember the last time I had that out
Thanks again gents, another issue resolved.

Makes an excellent chrome cleaner also.

Significant update!
Hey Catalyst, remember this?
well..I've always fancied doing this, but held off until I recently bought a second Westbury in black.
Take one heat gun and one smooth wallpaper scraper.....
Nice and easy does it, heat it gently, keep the gun moving and never let the topcoat bubble.
this method does take some of the grain filler with the topcoat but a light sanding with 240/320/400grit then wet it all and 400 again, then burnish with a jaycloth till shiny, this leaves a nice workable finish, I did the same with the Prestige back and neck, saves hours! and less messy!
Tru Oil again, this is after just one thin coat rubbed in hard.
It will get one more coat then left for a day or two, after that I'll apply each coat with wet'n'dry to create a slurry of mahogany/oil which will fill the grain, another 4 or 5 should do it.
The headstock will stay black, with a tiny wee bitty black nail varnish on the lacquer chips.

Re: Pretty standard affair
Been struggling to find a 4mm switch tip (other than daft neon colours) that I could reshape for this, the original was kindly donated to the Prestige.
So last night while watching Glastonbury I remembered the heli-coil kit I bought.... I had a spare 3mm tip in black which would do nicely.
Just using the tap-handle I drilled by hand, tapped it and coiled the bugger, 5 mins work after countless hours fruitlessly searching!
Just need to pop it in the Dremel and introduce the sandpaper...
I would have gone to westbone again but 3 new guitars recently have severely sapped the gas funds!

Thanksmman.
Its actually the tools that do the clever stuff, I'm just learning to tell them how!
I had a real soft spot for this ever since I opened your packag, but now it feells entirely different, very like a worn brown sg I tried in GuitarGuitar, but much, much heavier.

There is a real honesty and simplicity about that natural finish now, to my eyes it enhances the body contours and detailing and shows off the wood, really classy Pete

Thanks!
You're right about the body contours, the French curve around the body face just stands out so much clearer.
The feel of thin Tru Oil on this is silky organic, just love it!
