Humbucker-sized P90's
Greetings! Was curious to find out if anyone has any experience with the humbucker sized P90 pickups? Do they even sound like P90's?

Apropos of this post, today I received a package via the "Royal Mail" containing a pair of British Warman HBP90's. LINK
Just finished popping them into my Epiphone Les Paul Studio. Sound really good. Potted too. Another recommendation.
Very good quality, for reasonable cost. In my case though the delivery time was outrageous: 6 weeks! No idea why. I've had faster service from Hong Kong.

Re: Humbucker-sized P90's
Interesting, its hard getting reliable info online regarding the HB p90's
I've been tempted for a long time but always put off by indecision, and those Warmans Barry has, great price if they sound good.....lost count of the number of times I've hovered over the buy-it-now button and bailed out.
Barry do they sound like a convincing p90? this time I'm serious about getting a set as I have a Westbury Standard on its way to me without the stock Dimarzios......which I currently have in my white ST.....so out they'll be coming and leaving the ST pupless....hbp90 in an ST? your thoughts?

Re: Humbucker-sized P90's
Look, nothing is gonna sound like a vintage P90 except a vintage P90. The ones in my '64 Gibson ES330 are amazing...BUT they can howl like a Banshee and hum like a senile singer who forgets the words. It happens.
Most modern day copies are wax potted and so are at least a lot tamer by comparison. As for tone, well, that's gonna be subjective methinks. To my old ears the GFS product sounds very, very close. It delivers a very clear, almost sweet sounding output at moderate levels. Drive it harder and it breaks up very nicely, delivering a nice bluesy vibe.
I haven't had the Warmans long enough yet but they sounded more than up to the task during the short time I was breaking them in. I'm still fiddling wif the height some. P90's tend to sound better closer to the body than the strings incidentally.
They both sound great in their respective guitars. But they are more traditional woods eh? Not sure how they'd do in a Maple body. Mike rebuilt a Spectrum recently with P90'sh pups. I'm sure he'll chime in. 'Course some Spectrums do have single coil pups, but they produce more of a Strat sound. P90's are different breed.

Depends which amp your using too.
Bedroom practice V Marshall 2203 cranked up into a 4x12
It's all subject.

Re: Humbucker-sized P90's
Well, like Barry, I received a parcel from the Royal Mail today containing a pair of Warman HBP90s.
Chucked em in my white Spectrum St and by jove they sound so good, clear as a bell, noiseless and they break up quite nicely.
There isn't much in the way of sparkling highs, but luckily that wasn't what I was after for this geetar.
Punchy crunchy warm and funky!
Looks good too :-)
oh and I use a Vox Vt15, in manual mode.

Re: Humbucker-sized P90's
Excellent! That's a P90 alright.
They aren't usually noted for their high's. But mama, what a blues sound!
If you want a higher, chimey sound, you'd likely be happier with a Strat-like single coil.
Glad to hear they sound good in a maple body too.

I had a set of the Warman's in a guitar I was forced to sell, recently.. Really liked the sound of them. One day...
