Hehe, Close but no cigar, right brand wrong model.
I guessed you might be aware of this one Dan, the seller informed me a local care worker was trying for it and I assumed your dastardly brother might have been one of the 86 callers, don't let the cat out the bag mate

I noticed the gold hardware, only the blinged out model got that. Has the original finish survived, there should be bookmatched veneers front and back.

sadly no, the neck can be saved, but the original finish has been long gone, at least on the front, not tried the back yet.

It really is in bad shape, a rather nasty crack from the neck pocket which moves a tad under pressure.
looks to have had one of the lower...horns?...reshaped a bit, but the neck seems ok apart from the butchered fretboard, which will probably take a scraping and recrowning.
think I'm gonna go with a green as close to original as possible and try a stain burst rather than using an airbrush.

Oh dear.
It's Deja vu all over again for me (and probably John too for that matter).
Don't know what it is with these models but they do seem to invite abuse, particularly around the neck pocket. If you have nothing else to do with your life you might find my sad tale somewhat entertaining... Urchin U60T Resto

Re: Why oh Why?
Have you guys ever used pure acetone for paint removal? what are my chances of going through the original clear and paint ? I've read acetone will eat up nitro, but I'm unsure of the finish on these Arias.
I used an acetone nail varnish remover on the neck without any issues but I presume its a weaker solution what with the aromas and oils n such...

Re: Why oh Why?
Yeah, that's one of my favourites too. It'll be terrific if you can save it. The original finish should be the same as our beloved Westones. I don't think acetone will do much if anything to disturb it. If the red crud was a rattle can application it should just melt away. But I'd wipe it off as soon as possible just to be safeSgt. As far as I can tell it is a rattlecan job, but not just one..no! looks to be red undercoat, red, glitter then something textured with gold glitter...has a real 100grit sandpaper finish!
what frightens me is what colour schemes have adorned this in the past....in the control cavity and neck heel is evidence of neon green, orange and pink!... terrifying.

Mate, you'll be fine; if I can do this stuff then you can can too!!
I saw the back of the neck on Arthur's at the EF yesterday; I didn't know that the green burst extended there - Uncle Matt wasn't fooling about, was he!!
Looking forward to pictures, bro!!

Thanks man, I think the crack can be glued, clamped and hidden with some creative burst edging ;-)
hopefully the acetone will be there when I get home so I can have a blast at it tonight.
Pics to follow.

UPDATE
So a little unhappy update....removed all the ghastly paint from front and back to find most of the ash veneer sanded away
paint removed
[img][/img]
sanded lightly
[img][/img]
[img][/img]
[img][/img]
Might just be able to save this if I give it a thicker black edge on the burst.....or a new veneer.....I had a brief look and found some lovely matched burr walnut veneers......daunting task for moi...

Umm, if you want some similar figured veneer, send me a pm.
Could salvage a new burst on there, just about!!
Would you do it green burst again?

Re: Why oh Why?
The edge of the burst would be better in a dark green/black.
Would also give more scope as you fade into the limited area.

Re: Why oh Why?
Well, I figure there's no harm in trying to salvage this first, though I am taken with the narrow black edge on the original which I wont be able to get with this one.
Definitely green again, and I'm a little unsure if it will come out ok with the remnants of red still there.
suck it and see

Re: Why oh Why?
I can vouch for Damian's veneer; he was kind enough to sell me a bit for my Urchin.
Though, I have to say, I reckon that's would come up OK.... remember to do a black stain first to bring the grain up, eh!!
Do you want some of the stain I have on hand? The green is beautiful... and free!!

Re: Why oh Why?
Thanks for the offer John, but I think I've lined up a Rothco & Frost Emerald green and a black from them too.
definitely going with black first, and the green looks a good match...though I can clearly see the laminate join under the veneer I wonder if it will show after staining..?

Re: Why oh Why?
Pete, you may want to rethink your colour choice mate. Not trying to be an alarmist but Green over Red will yield Brown, or at least a dirty version thereof.
Even though there is only a small amount of residual red in the grain it may be enough to bollox the works. Adding black should darken it, but there still may be a reddish tinge.
When I restored an old Vantage AV310 it had been rattle canned with blue paint which penetrated deeply into the grain. Couldn't get it out completely. So, instead of finishing in the creme colour I had wanted, I ended up staying with a blue which worked with the residual colour instead of fighting it. Came out very well in the end.
A red burst would be stunning on this too.

My thinking exactly Barry, that and the fact I can see the laminate join clearly has made me change my mind and contact has been established with Mr bone with the view to acquiring a new veneer ;-)
The factory red burst IS rather nice, but green it is!
