Westone wonderfulness
At first I thought it was an easter-egg created by Barry. But It didn't go away when easter was over and it keeps coming back every time I come back. Sort of like a marquee horizontal scrolling scripted thingy
WESTONE wonderfulness
I find it a bit irritating (that could be just me!) and started wondering. Is the frontpage now running 2 advertisements simultaneously? Or were there always 2 advertisements on top of each other?
At closer inspection I found the link in it points to pricebusters vglinkpgpartners and such that leads to an Amazon advertisement for headphones when you click on it, you know, the in-ear experience. Normally their adds have a different look & also the word westone is not logo styled. The link doesn't seem to be there when logged in btw. Barry, can you explain?

Re: Westone wonderfulness
Jim you are confused and obviously have not been paying attention.
What you are seeing is a scrolling announcement feature of the site, and it's nothing new. There have been many recent variations so far this year alone, Christmas, New Years, Valentines Day, St Patrick's Day, Easter/Passover...
The current one is just an advertisement...for us! The announcement is only seen on the Home page and disappears when you move into the Forums. And there is no hyperlink associated with it. You clicked on the Google Ad below it.

Re: Westone wonderfulness
Well thanks Barry that explains at least part of it. It's your advertisement.
But be not mistaken about the hyperlink associated with it!
Or else how do you explain this:
My cursor hovers above the word 'westone' and changes to the (invisible) hand (God's hand disappears when printscreening), suddenly the letters of the hyperlink turn red and the adres of the Link appears in the statusbar. Try it & make sure that when you do, you are not logged in! Just sayin'.

This is a new feature too? Selling the name? Why?

Re: Westone wonderfulness
Jim, you've already answered your own question in your screen clip: "Link added by Viglink" Not me. And it only works when not logged in, i.e. in public mode.
Check out Viglink's web site and you'll see how it works. I'll remind you that we do not own this site. It is hosted by a free service (Forumotion) set up long before I arrived as custodian. The trade off, as I have said many times here before, is that there is advertising on the site, primarily by Google. Forumotion has obviously signed up with Viglink to generate more revenue. It's that simple.
Stop placing your cursor on the Westone name and just log in.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up, I honestly thought you coded those changes...
Will look into the link, and yes hosting does cost and I'm still grateful for our beneficiary Neil or Neal making it possible at all!

Re: Westone wonderfulness
Not to put too fine a point on it Jim, but I believe Neil would be the (our) benefactor and we the membership are the beneficiaries.
Along with you I am most grateful as well, whatever the case.

Re: Westone wonderfulness
Neil set up these original forums which was built on a free hosting service, Netboarder. This is now owned and maintained by Forumotion and Neil has very little to with the Forum now except as a member.
However, he is the man responsible for providing us with the hosting resources to allow the creation of the WestoneGuitars.net web site. His generosity made that site a reality after the closure of David Blair's original 'info' site, and again, he stays well in the background, but always happy to lend a hand if things get out of hand technically.
John (Corsair) took over the Administration duties of these forums and I agreed to help out by building the new web site and freshening up the look and function here.
All clear now?

ADDENDUM ----edit
I just noticed that the added hyperlinks have disappeared, at least from the "Westone" text
My hunch is that Forumotion has been inundated with complaints! It was an annoying feature that I suspect caused more problems than revenue.
Let's hope it's gone for good and not being replaced with something else just as irritating.
EDIT
Well I boo boo'd.
Yes the added links are gone. But likely not for you!
I completely forgot that I had installed an addon utility to my Firefox browser which blocks junk like this as well as all site requests and ad requests. It's called Disconnect.me and so far it's lived up to its name as well as speeded up the loading of a lot of web sites.
If you're interested, read about it here, and download it here.

Re: Westone wonderfulness
I thought I'd put in a little bump on this thread for the benefit of those who may have missed the above addendum.
I should also point out that the add-on mentioned only works in Firefox/Chrome. If you're an Internet Explorer user, tough luck.
So far I'm very happy with it, AND it also removes that annoying Google Ad Sense banner at the top of the page!

Re: Westone wonderfulness
nice advice on the Disconnect.me Barry, I use firefox and an addon called NoScript, does the same job in not loading unwanted ads and banners.....almost ALL scripts are blocked, also inconjunction with AdBlockPlus addon, also available for Chrome.

Really Solved This Time!
I was doing a little bit more research and this VigLink technology is in fact installed by the host company here, Forumotion. Apparently it is rather rampant across the webosphere and is outraging everybody in large numbers because it can be rather intrusive, and a bloody nuisance!
The bad news: I can't access the SQL database which contains the code, so I cannot remove it from the board.
The good news: There is a simple way for you to remove it from your browser!
Go to this link and click on the big button "Disable VigLink". Done!
DISABLE VIGLINK
