Super Group Notion Empty Super Group Notion

Post by Brainfertilizer Sat Apr 13, 2013 2:27 pm

Probably just me, but I would love to see a group formed with:

Kelly Keagy on Drums

Dan Huff on Lead Guitar 1

Kip Winger on Bass

Tony McAlpine on Keyboards and Lead Guitar 2

Call it "Metal Dan" (playing off of Steely Dan), because the 3 would rotate in guitarists like:

Reb Beach

Jeff Watson

John Norum

Ritchie Kotzen

Paul Gilbert

Nuno Bettencourt

The point would be to have good lyrics, good melodies, good guitar riffs, good song structure, and then use the Steely Dan method of fitting the guitar solo to the song, with lots of twin/triple lead trade-offs between Huff, McAlpine, and the guitarist of the song.

All the guys in the band sing well, have good voices. All write decent songs with good lyrics. All know how to craft great song structure. With that much talent, you might have to deal with egos, maybe. But you'd also get so many great songs that one session in the studio would result in a kick-ass 20-song album.

Reb Beach, Paul Gilbert, Nuno, and maybe Dave Meniketti could also replace Huff if Dan is too busy being a producer, because they all can sing well, too...just not as well as Huff.

You could swap out Jack Blades for Kip if you think Kip is too soft...I just think Jack is more limited, vocally. But he's a great song-writer, as well.

...this thought came to me from listening to a Dokken album with Reb playing guitar, and being fascinated how cool the riffs were, just like the cool riffs from back in Winger. But the lyrics were Dokken lyrics, not as deep as Winger. Or not as cheesy, if you prefer.

Post by corsair Sun Apr 14, 2013 9:04 pm

oooh, can I play??

Drummer is Neil Peart... he drums like a good 'un and writes cool lyrics!!
Keyboards... gotta be Matthew Fisher!
Piano, well, Nicky Hopkins, of course!
Bassist is going to be Roger Glover, 'cause he can write a little bit as well as playing my kinda bass!!
Electric guitars... hmmm... if Ritchie is not available, which of course, he won't be!, then Earl Slick and Nile Rodgers will do just fine! Earl because he has the tastiest of chops and Nile because he can produce as well as having a slightly left field take on guitar playing.
Acoustic guitar; my NZ hero James Wilkinson... because he can do bass as well and has some of the most outrageous chops I've ever seen on an acoustic guitar, and plays a Westone Spectrum GT Bass!!
Horns.... the Marsalis brothers, of course, plus Raphael Ravenscroft on sax, and Thijs Van Leer on flute, doubling on Hammond!
Vox... the biggie; (we're talking living musos here, right??)... David Bowie. Coolest man on the planet.

This will all change in the next 5 minutes as more tunes roll around on the iPad....

lol!

Ann Wilson on vox
Joan Jett on rhythm guitar & backing vocals
Talk Wilkenfeld on bass guitar
Christine McVie on keyboards & backing vocals
Jen Ledger on drums
Kelley Deal on lead guitar (when Carrie Brownstein isn't available)

I guess you could throw Stevie in on the tambourine if Christine would sign off on it to get some alternate lead vocals in the mix time to time.

Post by Iceman Tue Apr 16, 2013 9:15 pm

I have nothing but the utmost respect for all of the Wilburys...just not so much when they are together as a band. The same goes for other giants who decide to form and record/tour in what comes off to me as a gimmick, such as the Highwaymen for example.

The age of the true supergroups was back a time ago now...

The Cream
Bad Company
Humble Pie
U.K.

Nearest thing around to it today would be Foo Fighters or Liquid Tension Experiment, maybe Five Finger Death Punch.

The point if this thread as I took it was more of a Rotisserie League take on forming a band anyway, wasn't it?

Most players have played with upteen groups, that's their living.

As for the Wilburys they were a group of freinds.
Certainly didn't do it for a gimmick or a fast few bucks I'm sure, Christ they were multi millionaires way before that.

Maybe it's the love of music.

Anyone care to share where the notion of the "Super Group" originated from?

And I agree Damian, the Wilburys were quite well off and I'm certain money was not in the conversation, but a gimmick it still looked to my eyes. Having a commemorative guitar built and marketed to the public probably is the chief reason why I think of them as somewhat cheesy, no matter how well written and produced they were.

Not so much "cheesy" as parody. The idea I think was to emulate a modern version of a travelling minstrel show. The decorated Gretsch guitar was a promotional/commemorative item which conjures up images of the things that may have been sold out of the caravan along the way traveling town to town. Incidentally, there were several different versions of the design on that guitar, and they have become collectables.

Josh Homme - Vox 'n' Guitars
Nick Oliveri - Bass 'n' B' Vox
Mark Lanegan - Guitar
Dave Grohl - Drums

I know it's already been done but you can't mess with perfection. "No One Knows" is one of the greatest rock songs ever.

More in the vein of the thread...

Vinnie Paul - Drums.. just check out anything from "Cowboys From Hell"
Nuno Bettencourt - Guitar ...riffy, melodic and percussive and would lock in with VP
Dave Ellefson - bass..SOLID and much underated
Reeves Gabrels - Guitar..would play the complete antithesis of NB to create an amazing sonic sound scape
Anyone on keys - I don't really know anyone

Josh homme guits n vox
dave grohl drums
john Paul Jones bass

collectively known as Them Crooked Vultures, I was thrilled to hear they were producing an album, but here is proof that supergroups aren't always greater than the sum of their parts, it was a massive let down for me.

Some nice choices for the collaborations with other world musicians here. It started me to think back to the eighties when Afrian Super Groups performed on western Stages. Think, King Sunny Ade & his Noble Kings, Fela Kuti and Franco et le TPOK Jazz. The stage crowded with often as much as 20 musicians and dancers. Those days are gone I'm afraid. Often very gifted guitarplayers with a bag of ther own coming from this continent. I really like what Habib Koite makes and does nowadays btw. I'm also a sucker for Brasilian guitar and cavaquinho, players music and songwriting. They collaborate a lot, it is almost natural to the culture.
You inspired me to share a few fav's of groups and artists not very well known in the western world but I will limit it to Brasil this time.

Yep; me too. I think that's the first time the concept was publicised as such, too, though how Rick Grech fits in to the whole "supergroup" ethos I don't know! He was the bass player for Family before Blind Faith...

I've heard the same said over and over regarding Blind Faith which is funny seeing as how The Cream had formed 3 years prior, whom I consider to be the earliest group of "supers" even though that colloquialism was not commonly used then.

As I understand it the term came into being as a result of the Super Session LP that was recorded in 1968 by Bloomfield, Kooper and Stills. Don\'t Know

And no, Damian... no Gretsch kitsch need apply... Laughing

Agree with David Grohl on just about any instrument.

Roy Buchanan (non-living category) possessed so much feel, it almost didn't matter what song he played. Heavily enjoyable rythym or lead.

very poor, totally non HD quality, but has Jimi and Roy together:

Or... What about a so-called bluesy "supergroup"? 10 Years After - sg #1.

Leo Lyons
Chick Churchill
Ric Lee
Joe Gooch
Alvin Lee

Or.. bluesy supergroup #2 (pick any of their early iterations) - The Yardbirds:

If living muso's (best word on the board, thank you John) were not the stipulation, I would chuck in Frank Zappa on lead guitar. An awesome genius of a human.
