Re: What is this?
Ding! Ding! Ding! We have two winners!!!
Very versatile shredder and effortlessly fast. If it stays low it would be quite a good buy. They were all made either in Korea or here in the USA at the SLM custom shop. Usually the pups and or the tuners will tell you which.
VERY low production run in comparison to most models in the '89 - '90 era. Refer to the 6th reply down in this thread...

I know you are in a holding pattern on purchases Sarc, but I'd encourage you to rethink this one.

I might make a go at it, the nut is in bad shape, anybody have a replacement to fit the guitar? or would it be better just to buy a blank and fashon a new one? Thanks Ben.

Re: What is this?
anybody around here know about the pickups in this model? has anybody had a look inside at the pickups?
i am curious .... :?:
the catalog describes them as Mag V-2 neck with tap, Mag V-1 middle, Mag V-2 bridge with tap. can anybody translate?

Re: What is this?
Aside from the obvious (1=single coil, 2=humbucker) nope.
Since it's a Korean instrument there would not be any MMK reference or correlation that I'm aware of.
But, you might find this discussion of Mats pups of general interest over at the Matsumoku forum: LINK

Re: What is this?
i picked up another nice project recently. i will make another thread with more details later, but since this guitar came up, i thought i would put this in here.
i got an unexpected look inside the pickups... i was cleaning the back guitar and the bridge pickup just fell out and was hanging by the wires, when i checked the neck pickup, it was ready to go too. i guess the glue that held them together just gave out.
and so i notice that from the outside the pickups look identical. from the inside there are a few differences.
both pickups look to have two identical coils side by side. (like two single coils in the same shell)
i thought that the neck pickup had lost it's magnet, but not true. the pole pieces are magnetized.
but then the bridge pickup has what appears to be a bar magnet. i didn't pull it away to see if the pole pieces are magnetized in the bridge pickup or if the bar is the 'driver' magnet, or both?
it is easy to see that there is a difference in the space between the coils, the neck coils are too close to fit the same magnet that is in the bridge pickup. so the pickups must have been designed as 'neck' or 'bridge'
i had to replace the switch for the neck pickup, and now have checked the wiring. everything works fine. no bar magnet in the neck and it works. bar magnet in the bridge and it works. middle pickup working. i'm not ready to string up the guitar yet so i don't know what they sound like in action.

the switches are for 1. neck; single/off/humbucker, 2. middle; on/off, 3. bridge; single/off/humbucker
the pots are; volume, tone, mid-shape

Re: What is this?
The bridge pup has many more windings.
Probably a ceramic magnet in there to retain some highs.

Re: What is this?
Odd eh? Looks almost like side by side P90's.
No idea what's going on there. Don't magnetic rods still need a bar somewhere between the coils (horizontlly or vertically) :?:
Be interesting to hear what sound it makes.

Re: What is this?
meter check:
neck- 12.31, 6.28/ 6.02
middle- 7.92
bridge- 12.02, 5.94/6.09
it appears from the wiring connections, that the neck and bridge are out of phase. the pickups have 2 shielded cables from each pickup, (R,W,shield).
the neck pup has one red to ground, two whites on switch for coil tap, one red on switch for humbucker.
the bridge pup has one white to ground, two reds on the switch for coil tap, one white on switch for humbucker.
the middle pup has just two wires, red and blue. red is connected to ground.

Barry wrote: Don't magnetic rods still need a bar somewhere between the coils (horizontlly or vertically) :?: .
no bar needed. the magnetic field from the pole pieces is enough. a non-magnetic bar would couple the magnetic fields of the different magnets and change the shape of the field. the separate magnets of adjacent pole pieces work to increase the flux density around the coil. magnetic lines of flux will not cross, they become compressed instead. greater flux density increases induction through the coil, from the vibrating string.
that is why i am curious about the bar on the bridge pickup, is it magnetized?
are the pole pieces magnetized too?
how are the poles oriented on the bar magnet?
all of that would influence the performance of the pickup.
i will try to check these things as i go along....
btw, yes it is a ceramic magnet on the bridge pup

Re: What is this?
a ceramic magnet is not concuctive whereas an alnico is a metal alloy (ALuminum, NIckel, CObalt) and is conductive.
take a multimeter and set to the highest setting to measure ohms
place probes on magnet
if meter reads anything, usually close to 0 ohms, then it is conductive and therefore not ceramic, a metal of some sort
a ceramic pickup will not give any reading at all, the meter will show "OL" or infinity or something like that

they can be made any shape a metal alloy can be shaped
as typical for pickups , rods or bars. you can find them magnetized or not.
loads available for sale on ebay. all types, shapes, sizes

Not sure what happened with the original bid taker on this, but somehow this exact guitar & case is downstairs! I think I took it for $128 or something. Not bad for a MIK fixer upper!blackstrat wrote:Thanks again, most knowledgeable members. Ben.

Re: What is this?
I believe that in some single coil pickups, the pole pieces themselves are built from Alnico and thus do not need a bar magnet on the bottom, Didn't the original strats have that?
with a classic humbucker, the pole pieces are not magnetic in themselves, but a bar magnet is used instead.
It looks like what they have done is build an humbucker with magnetised pole pieces.....my buest guess would be that they were trying to get a more natural single coil strat type sound out of the neck pickup when the coil splitter is engaged.
of course you get singles with bar magnets on the bottom too, but those are usually on cheaper guitars and will (as previously mentioned) almost certainly be ceramic magnets, and don't really sound like proper strat pickups.

Re: What is this?
Is it exactly like the guitar in the video? If so, it's not a "Westone" exactly, but a fake Westone that we see floating around sometimes. Probably made in China, these guitars were just branded with the Westone name. We've seen BC Rich Mockingbird copies and Les Paul copies like this.
Do you like it? If so, that's what really matters.

Re: What is this?
Yeah, this is definitely not a Matsumoku instrument, and as Chad points out, Chinese made. (If I recall correctly the Westone name is now owned by a German company?)deajka wrote:...I bought this last week the Westone guitar and i would like identify that but i not found many info...
The video is just plain silly (Weston?!?) and definitely not a 30 year old instrument.
