MAKO guitars
Anyone have a Mako guitar? I had one when I was 13. It was a plywood tele copy that I believe was MIK. I hear there LP copies are decent and they made some weird pointys and strat copies as well.
Not much known about them on the net other than guesses and speculation. I've never seen one like this before:
MAKO
This is a strat copy with 2 HB's and I figured I would buy it to see if they were all plywood and to practice some 'work' on. I'm going to give a go at a refret on it before trying that on one of my 'good' guitars. I figure I can keep trying until I get it right

Re: MAKO guitars
I got a Mako in high school, and i still have it! A buddy of mine who was an art student painted some crazy designs on it and it is displayed in my shed 20+ years later. It is the Explorer/Fling V shape, and a plywood piece of s**t for sure. I do know that Mako made some good guitars, even neck thrus, but the majority were crap ala Hondos. A great guitar to work on i would imagine.
So did you win ?

Re: MAKO guitars
yup-got it for $100 - should be here on Monday and will be a nice test guitar for some projects. I wish I still had the Tele I got in '83 just to know how good/bad it was. Back then I couldn't tell you the difference between a telecaster or a teleprompter

Re: MAKO guitars
Got it today - need to take it apart to see if it is ply
It has decent binding, and the PUPS sound pretty good for a H+H guitar
Odd thing is that it was shipped with what appears to be very light acoustic strings with a wound G. New strings as well. Must be super light as I can bend em as well as my .10 guitars. It has an arched top so that part can't be ply, but curious when I take it down to see if they ever made solid wood Mako's. I doubt it.
The neck also has a 1/8th inch gap in the lower pocket so not a lot of quality control there.
got to be honest though, it sounds pretty good as a heavy rock guitar - not sure what the PUPS are but will see if they have any markings when I change strings.

I had one of those too. It was a good guitar. It sounded great! I got it in around 1984-1985.

Re: MAKO guitars
Couldn't resist, here's the ol Mako hangin in the shed. I bought it new around '86 and can't really remember how it sounded but i sucked back then so it didn't matter much anyway. I soon upgraded to my Charvel/Jackson model 3 which i still have and the Mako became a piece of art in 91 or so. I traded a Gibson "The Paul" for my Charvel, which i now regret, i think i paid like $200 for it back in the day.
I wish i had a scanner, i could show you guys some pretty hilarious pictures from back then!

I was checkin out your new Mako Sarc, and it actually looks pretty cool. Nice its an archtop, and i like the little point on the insides of the horns, cool lookin body. Hope she's not ply when you open her up, then again, everyone needs at least one ply guitar, right?
