Sanded away the paint and fixed some blemishes today. I also used a dremmel to route out room for the switch. So the normal plate will fit on the back which is good.
Got some more sanding to do tomorrow and then ready for the real paint job.

Thanks Fish for the PUP stencils - I may use one on this guitar, but will make it on the 350 after I am done with this one.

Getting close to the end on this - paint, sanding, clear, sanding, buffing, and put it all together.

Post by Guest Mon Jan 02, 2012 5:53 pm

Ok, so I got some more work done today, the switch slot needed to be 1/4 inch longer and had to drill new hole for the switch screws. This switch is a bit wider than original so made sure all was set and then at the last minute decide to change the color.

This pic is after the 3rd coat. I did plenty more. It looks to be a bit closer to the Caspian blue I was looking for. It will dry over night and then maybe I will put up another couple if pics.

I can;t believe it is January and I still had a bug land on it while I was spraying - ugh. Hopefully he will remain under the clear coats to come and not affect the finish.

While I did like the previous color....I like this one better. Now the question is - for the Pantera logo, is it too dark to do a blak logo, or should I put an aged white one on (which would look more like the 390)?

Great colour Sarc !!

I would certainly go for the aged white logo and I would put it on as early as possible to allow you the hide the edges under as many clear coats as you can.

From the pics, it does look a little uneven. I initially said do not sand a metallic finish as it sheers the metal particles and damages the final finish, but I now go with Westbones advice i.e. do not sand your last coat.

Either that. or be prepared to put on lots of lacquer and wet sand until smooth (obviously avoiding going right through to your base coat)

Hoax - no sanding yet so I will be going with your plan B Smile
It's looking better and more even as it dries, but I planned on no sanding the metallic. I figure when I took the paint off of this thing it took 10 Minutes with a power sander to get to wood - so they had a ton of color and clear on it. I'm gonna put a lot of clear, then wetsand starting with a finer grit than my 390 and then try to sand less and buff more. We shall see how it goes!

Nice colour..

I would seriously give it a sand before any clear.
Get it nice and flat before a final colour coat.

What paint are you using? can/gun, cellulose/acrylic or 2 pack.

It is ratlle can, and I think I will do a sand and then a few more coats. The color looks really nice after drying, much darker than it looks in the pic. It's been very cold here this week - below freezing, which is real cold for Florida so it is putting a little delay on working it.

So since it is in the 30's this week at night in Fla. I had some time to change my mind and spent the last couple of hours wet sanding down the color. It's much more flat than before, but now I need to buy more paint to put on top. So hopefully this weekend it will warm up enough to paint and then the clear. Ah but in the meanwhile I need to find my images for my logo and try to get a color to match the headstock logo. Off to look.....

I'd give the final colour coat a good week or 2 at least to dry off. In a warm place.
As that paint dries it will 'sink'.
To many coats on undry paint will shrink up in time and cause tiny cracks in the paint. A bit like the marbled effect.

It did warm up enough to hit with more color yesterday afternoon. I'm glad I listened to suggestions to wet sand flat and that more color coats, as it looks much better.
I need to see if I can find the waterslide paper somewhere, or I'll order more again while the paint settles.

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 Empty Color is done.

Post by Guest Tue Jan 10, 2012 7:34 pm

Color is done. I had to sand once more an apply more color as there was a mishap. Letting a guitar dry in a room where a 13 year old and a soccer ball cause the guitar to fall is a bad mix. Oh well, lesson learned.

Measuring up the size of the logo on my 390:

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 512

And then printed logos- tried to make them as yellow as the headstock logo. tough to tell on transparent paper with a white background but looks close:

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 710

Ugh - I did forget to have the clear ready. I need to spray clear on the decal and let dry before applying so maybe tomorrow. I also need to think about the truss rod cover. Easy enough to make, but I need to put the model # on it. Hmmm decal for that too? gotta be something better.

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 Empty Progress

Post by Guest Mon Jan 16, 2012 8:48 pm

Ok so big issue is the body logo will not be going on. It looked green as the dark blue over powered my ink jet. I could have tried a few more things but to be honest I wanted to get done with sanding, so at the moment no Pantera logo on the body - sorry folks, decision made - which really means I got frustrated.

So onto the current pics. I'm done wet sanding and used a 4000 and 6000 grit sanding cloth. I then put on just a wee bit swirl remover and took these pics. I am not done yet, I'm going to take the buffer to it and really make it shine. Might be done in a few days - in the meanwhile I will make a new truss rud cover. I think if all goes well this one is done this weekend! - Oh yeah , one more thing - might not be a bad idea to get a set of strings for it Smile

The little white spots are just dust and the 2nd pic has some hand smudges but the rest is looking pretty good. The final buffing is gonna be nice I think.

Been thinking about that - not sure what the best way to do that. It's gonna have a nice bit of options with the pickups. I always think youtube sounds lame unless ya can pull right from audio instead of a video cam. I need to get some good recording software just for my own recording, but where to upload for something like a sampling of sounds?

Sarcaster,
I posted a while back about Reaper - really good recording software. Millions of options. It's free to try with no limitations, you need to buy after 30 days but the devs seem to be really relaxed about that, it won't stop working, you just get a nag screen for about 5 seconds at startup.
Here's a link to the site:

this is a great website. anyone can contribute recordings, audio or video.

i have posted many recordings there. no problems.

another place to load up some audio recordings is here >> http://soundcloud.com/ <<
i haven't uploaded any here but i've had others link me to their recordings here. it looks to be simple.

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 Empty The Finish is Finished!

Post by Guest Wed Jan 18, 2012 8:50 pm

Ok so I am done with the buffing and am very glad there is no more sanding. It is like glass and the metalic finsih looks great. There are some very small specks here and there that are low spots ( those who have done wet sanding know what I mean) but not bad over all. Much better than the X390 paint job (which I think I may now redo at some point).
Here it is after the finishing is now finished:

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 A11

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 B11

This is semi assembled. notice 2 neck plate screw are missing - have to find those. I also need to get some plate screws.

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 C11

And the front (I didn't realize how bad the fret board needed cleaning until just now):

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 D10

Now here is the one horrible thing. When I put the neck in, I did not realize that the paint in the neck pocket would build up enough to make the join so much tighter. I had to push hard to get the neck in and heard a little "chip !". And that is exactly what it was....pushing the neck in the pocket with no room caused a bit of paint to chip off where the neck meets the body.
I have to be honest, it is a lesson learned, but it doesn't bother me too much since the rest looks to good and it is an honest mistake. I really don't see myself redoing the entire finish at this point. I'm more likely to refinish the 390 in a different color before i go down the re-refinish of this one. I am anxious to get onto the next project and will live with this one big flaw.

That being said - here is a pic of it:

string - 12 string PANTERA Project - Page 4 F10

So now to finish it up, I need to order some screws for the neck plate and back plates, install the PUPs, make a truss rod cover, string it up and it is done.

whew...long post, but progress has been made

I second John's fingernail polish tip. Works a treat. Take your chip to a Sally Beauty store or whatever you have in those parts, and some young lass will help ya.

Still gotta do that for my "cool copper" Danelectro. Got a couple of nasty chips which are near impossible to match.

here's a rough cut of the truss rod cover. Looks a bit odd since it is bigger than normal, but I needed to cover the holes from the locking saddle.

And here's one with the hardware installed. I just need to get some neck plate screws before stringing it up. And a new flushmount jack.

Sarc

The finish you achieved is quite stunning. From the photos it looks factory.

Well done!

That is simply superb wormanship on this one. It is one cool 12 string for certain and can't wait to hear an audio clip of it. Great job.
