Greetings!

I recently came across this site while trying to find a bit more information on my recent purchase of a 1984 Dynasty. I must say I'm quite impressed, and a bit overwhelmed by the wealth of knowledge here!

The Dynasty is my second Westone, the first being an '84 Electra Westone Phoenix. At the time that I had owned that one, back around 1991, a friend of mine had a Dynasty, and I vowed that I would have one some day! Well that day arrived Friday due to a very good buy on ebay!
Here she is:

YEARS - Say hello... - Page 16 _57

I own several guitars now, but this one has a special nostalgic place in my heart, and usually winds up in my hands first.

Thanks to all the people who have had a hand in putting this place together, it's been an immense help already, and I know I'll learn more than I'll ever need to know as the days roll by!

Welcome, Shane; you have a real little gem there and that H/S/H set up has not been improved on to this day.

Looks to be in very nice nick, too!!

Hi,

I'm Harm 31 living in Bruges Belgium.
I work as an theatre technician.

Loving & trying to play music since my 5th birthday.
Bought my first guitar a Fender Stratocaster (MIM) at my 16th birthday instead of a moped.  Glad I made that choice!

Since 2 years I started playing bass guitar, playing in a band with guys that all work in the cultural sector, not easy to find some time to get togheter.

Picture of my guitars (non Westone, I recently got the bug)

I just like music, almost every genre but most of the time I listen to Jazz.  Give me some Channel Zero or Benjamin Britten & I'm also happy.  I have to say I had a big Hendrix period, so he still puts a smile upon my face.

Hi Guys,

My name is George, live in Cupar in Scotland. I've been playing guitar for longer than I care to remember - never very well, I hasten to add.

Bought my Westone Session II for a couple of hundred twenty years ago, and have played it constantly since. It is the only electric guitar I use, and although I've tried others, I just prefer the feel and tone of this big bodied beauty.

Play in a blues band (Dirt Road Blues) and primarily play harmonica, but I love strapping on the guitar and rocking on.

This forum has been useful already, and I've picked up a few useful pointers on set-up. So thanks for all the advice.

Hello! Just discovered this forum yesterday- wow. I had no idea there were so many Westone aficionados out there. I have a longer post with a question which I'll put in the general thread later, but for now, here are the basics: Westone Spectrum II XA1230 (white) with Dimarzio humbucker. Marshall amp, a few DOD and BOSS effects in a loop. Keep it simple, keep it clean.

Influences: EVH, Matthias Jabs, Pete Townsend, Billy Corgan, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy.

Favorite songs to play on my Westone: Panama, You Really Got Me, All Right Now, Magic Carpet Ride.

How do I feel about my Westone? The same way I feel about my arm or my ear. It's a part of me, at this point.

Looking forward to some great conversations and fact-sharing (and learning!) on this board.

Hi everyone.
I have recently re-acquired my Spectrum III XA1330. It's in really rough shape. Rust, pitting, etc. I bought it new & then gave it to a friend who just kept in the attic. Hopefully just a lot of TLC will get it back in shape. But it feels like a player. We'll see. I'll get some pics up soon.

Hi,

My name is Dan.
Age 66
Status Married
Retired
Guitars - Squier chambered Tele
          - Hofner  Shorty Travel Guitar
          - Ashton Bass
          - Skylark Thinline Tele copy with Bigsby Trem
          - Westone Thunder 1-T (1983)

Have just acquired the Westone today and not had time yet to do anything other than a quick visual check. Headstock, neck and frets are immaculate but pickup screws corroded (will replace), mini switches have seen better days (replace maybe).  It's a floating trem, which I hate and the collar is missing although I have the original arm (probably block the Trem depending on effect on sustain).  This model has a bone not brass nut and seems well cut (check when I restring).

This is probably my least favourite Thunder but just have not seen an active Thunder III I can afford.

Once I've done a full sound check I expect to be visiting the Technical Forum for advice.

Does anyone know whether any of the published passive wiring diagrams could apply to Thunder 1-T?

Hi, I'm a guitarist/luthier. I just discovered a neck in an obscure shop in a remote Oregon town. I immediately recognized it as a neck that was fast. After some internet searching I found out about Westone. I still don't know what guitar it came from but the serial number is...053011. I would like to know more about what guitar it came from. I plan on inserting it into a Lyptus body.
Thrilled to be a part of this.
thanks for any help!

Hi,

My first guitar was a thunder 1a when I was 15; I'm 46 now, and my playing's not that much better.

I also owned a clipper 6, took it apart to paint it - it got stolen. Still looking for another (i'm left handed).

Am in the process of buying a slightly wrecked thunder as my next project. I already own a few guitars..

Aria bodied/Hohner necked tele partscaster, modified Squier classic vibe 50's tele, modified y2k squier standard strat, Hohner st ferari, modified Hohner HH super-strat, modified mij encore lp junior (righty), matsumoku aria stray cat (righty), Gordon Smith GS1/60, Peavey milestone bass, modified beatle bass copy ... I've also recently finished my first scratch build; A sorta esquire/ofset/80's inspired thingy in local suffolk ash with a series/parallel dimarzio evo pickup. I have a few acoustic's, a mandolin, and am also at the design stages for my very own neck-thru/hollow body.

I think i'll need some help and/or parts.

Looking forward to interacting with you  Wink

Hi Dan, nice to see another "young feller" here.  Thumb Up
I would expect the posted wiring schematic to apply to the Thunder 1-T as well. The bridge has no affect on the electronics eh?

Thanks Barry! Yep read the catologue scan as well as the magazine review. The Qantam is red and in excellent condition with the silver case (which I'm discovering is rare on it's own). A guy had it in storage for over 10 years. Only problem is the tone pot/dial is mia? It's currently wired vol, vol. The wireing diagram on the Westone site is a godsend. On my way to the guitar store now to buy the pot and new strings.

I have a question about strings (again I'm a guitar player) do I need specific strings since it's short scale or just any standard strings?

Dunno. Yer talkin' to another guitar player.  Smile
Not sure if this takes those goofy double ball ended thingies like the Steinberger bass does. If so, might be hard to find. Might be best at this point to post a new thread in the Technical section.  Wink

I didn't think the quantum is a short scale!
It takes standard strings as there's a string lock where the headstock should be,  happy plucking!

Hi!

I just joined the forum. Got a Thunder II-A 6 string in pearl white as my first 'proper' guitar at around 14, still got it and play it! Recently bought a red Concord I 6 string (first version) which I've cosmetically modified somewhat. I have a question re the truss rod over on the 'technical' topic. Will post pix soon.

Though I have 2 Westone 6 strings, I play bass professionally and my main instrument is a 1983(ish) BC Rich thru neck NJ Eagle which, like Westones, is a very underrated instrument in the general world of guitar snobbery. In my experience Japanese instruments from the 1980s are as good, if not better, than a lot of revered American models. For one thing, the headstocks don't break off at the slightest bump (I'm looking at you Gibson Thunderbird and Ripper!).

Thanks for the forum btw, it's great!

YEARS - Say hello... - Page 16 Empty Matsumoku rediscovered

Post by David_A Sun Oct 26, 2014 8:34 pm

Hello to all, and thank you for such a wealth of information. I've been looking at this site since 2010 when I bought a Westone guitar and wanted to know a bit more about it. Having recently bought another model (see my avatar) I thought it would be a good idea to register so I can share my experiences. So - I'll start by telling you a bit about myself. My name is Alan and I have played guitar since I was about 13, and as I am now 65 that's a lot of years! In that time I have played just about every genre of music, and was professional for a good few years before my fatherly duties demanded that I get a 'proper job'. I decided a few years ago that I would stop doing 'commercial' gigs and just play what I enjoyed, which is jazz. I'm now doing just as many gigs as I used to, but for hardly any money! I suspect that being primarily interested in jazz playing may make me a bit unusual here, but rest assured I have played in a heavy rock band myself! I've just come to prefer the more natural sound of a guitar to the strangled overdrive sound that all young players seem to crave. So - how did I become interested in Westone? Well, I was offered the chance to join a gigging soul/cabaret band who already had a guitarist but wanted a bass player, so I bought a brand new Westone Thunder 1A bass. It was very cheap, looked good, and sounded good too. At the time I thought it couldn't be that good because it was a cheap Japanese copy, so I sold it. What a mistake that was! At around that time the Aria Pro II guitars came out and I drooled over the top-of-the-range one based on the Les-Paul shape. I couldn't afford that so I bought a cheaper version with a bolt-on neck. A friend of mine really liked it and constantly badgered me to sell it to him, and in the end I did - another mistake. He immediately changed the pickups and electrics; I don't know why, it sounded good as it was. Now fast-forward to 2010 and for the first time in my life I had a bit of money to invest in one or two more guitars. I started to realise that the Matsumoku factory was responsible for building some great guitars in the 80's, and so I started to look out for any that were being sold at a reasonable price. I'm pleased to say I now have two beautiful Westones: a Rainbow 1 version 3, and a Session II. The Rainbow was in a sorry state; it must have been kept in damp conditions. The pickups had a lot of corrosion on the metalwork, but with a bit of careful work it looks really good now. I've only had the Session II for a month; it also needed a bit of work, and is still not perfect, but there is one thing about its construction that took me completely by surprise! It will take a bit of fancy photography to show you what I mean, but hopefully I'll get some free time soon to do it so I can post some pictures for you all.

Welcome Rich, great guitar. Post her up in the technical Forum and let the "experts" help you through it.

Nice to have you here PiB. I have a weakness for the Spectrum line (got 6 of 'em!). Great little players.

Hi David and welcome. Particularly nice to have another *ahem* mature member join the fold.  Coffee Drinker
I have immense respect for anyone who plays Jazz guitar and you certainly have 2 of the best Mats instruments to accomplish that.
Let's see those pix!

Hi,

I've got a Westone Spectrum SX I bought in a North London Music shop around 1987.  It is still getting played regularly and is in its original condition.  I'll post some pics when I'm allowed to.

Cheers!

Hi There

I have had a Westone Quantum Bass since around 1989 and just got around to looking at them on the net and found this site.
Thought I might share some photos of my pride and joy...but just worked out the photo thing for new members. Any way its a Quantum Steinberger copy serial no 511100. Black with original silver Westone carry bag..

Hi there... my name is Brian, I live in Middleville, Michigan, and I have to say that, until doing some searching, I had no idea that anyone else in the world had ever even heard of Westone!  Can't tell ya how exciting it is to find other lovers out there.

I have to admit, I only have one... and it's the only one I ever had.  It's a 1985 Spectrum LX in the Metallic Black color, and it has a long, sad story.  I bought it in 1987 when I was a mere 19 years old and made weekly payments of $10 to the music store for almost a year to be able to take it home.  I always loved the way it looked and played, even though I really had no idea how to use it!

Then, in 1995 I had a house fire and it was badly charred, but I couldn't bring myself to throw it away... so I kept it, getting it out every once in awhile to look at it sadly.  One day at church, in 2004, a buddy of mine to whom I had told the sad story came to me and asked me to let him take it home with him because he had an idea for me.  I went ahead and let him take it, and about 3 months later he came walking into my workplace with a guitar case.  He had cleaned up the pieces of finish that were peeling and coated the entire body (char and all) with several layers of clear epoxy.  The new finish was amazing to see and the melted bridge and center pickups still worked!  (Sadly the neck pickup does not any longer, but I have a line on one that another friend of mine took out of an Electra Phoenix).

I tried to upload some pix, but I think I may have screwed it up.  I guess we'll see if they show up or not!

Oh yeah... after my friend brought it back to me, I nicknamed it "The Phoenix" because it rose from the flames... then found out just this last year that Electra (American sister company to Westone) had a version... same body style and everything... called "Phoenix."  I thought it was cool, anyway!

Anyway... that's my story.  I'm looking forward to digging in!

Hi and Happy New Year to you all,

My name is Jake, I live in Tennesse, USA.  I enjoyed reading several of the posts.  My first guitar was a Lotus Les Paul copy, candy apple red.  I still have it.  My first Westone, was a Prestige 250.  It's such a cool guitar, reminds me of a Paul Reed, with a through body neck and design.  I have had it several years.  I am in the process of moving and hate to part with it, and as a college student I can't afford to give anything away.  If anyone has any information on it or interested in the guitar please let me know.  It has a 7 digit serial number and going by the identification its a 1983, looks like original case, and in good shape.

Thanks,
Jake

hi guys and welcome  Cool

some nice stories and guitars you guys have.....and Jake, you will have no trouble finding a new owner for your 250.
That is one sweet guitar and I woulda snapped your hand off if you had been in the UK.
The 250 is one of the most valuable Westones out there and even more so if it is in good condition with the original case.

Hey Jake... my first guitar was a Lotus Les Paul copy too.  Black... lost it in the same fire that "the Phoenix" survived.  Loved that guitar... that is until I got my Westone.  Then I definitely started seeing it (the Lotus) for the cheap piece of crap it was!   lol!
