Re: 1982 Thunder I + Original Case (Ebay UK)
After getting it home and after about an hour of looking at it and trying to convince my wife (and myself) how it was worth the £256 i paid because it's in excellent condition, is all original, has zero fret wear and it came in an original Westone case, I thought I'd better plug it in!!! only to find the bridge pick up is dead! arrgghh !! had a quick look under the control and switch plates ....looks perfect no wires loose.... gonna investigate more later, just hope the pickup is alive!
pics to follow after the problem is solved and a clean & setup

Ohhh that hurts! hope you find that it's a simple problem. Judging by the condition of the rest of the guitar it would not seem likely that it's dead from abuse. Good luck!bowenjaybee wrote:...£256 i paid...only to find the bridge pick up is dead! arrgghh!!

Re: 1982 Thunder I + Original Case (Ebay UK)
After a lot of head scratching and staring into the control cavity it turned out that the pup was fine, it was the bloody pick-up selector switch, it is buggered. it involved a lot of eliminating and changing the odd wire here and there, I installed a temporary mini switch and bingo the problem was found! Yeah!!!.... just waiting on the new switch to arrive, don't really care that it's not an original switch but I do hope the original Westone tip fits..
The guitar is a real beauty, almost like new. apart from the switch problem I didn't have much work to do, I gave the bridge a good going over but left the knobs alone as I don't wanna remove the lacquer, they look fine
I now have a little brother for my Thunder 1 Bass!!. ............I can't stop thinking about the Spectrum models now! arrggghh!!
bandaged up and ready for it's operation!

Re: 1982 Thunder I + Original Case (Ebay UK)
Very nice indeed. Just out of interest have you tried switch cleaner on the selector switch.
Re: 1982 Thunder I + Original Case (Ebay UK)
That's good news! Always great when you pinpoint the problem like that, and even better that the pup's OK.
I was thinking the same thing as Westbone though, did you try some contact cleaner on the switch? I think pretty much every switch in my Spectrum stable crackled when I got them.
Usually, a little squirt or two cures it, but if there's heavy corrosion you can carefully try pulling a piece of fine emery paper between the contacts. Just be careful in prying the prongs apart. I got a bit sloppy a spread one too far and drastically reduced the tension. It still works, but in the bridge position it's now a "soft" landing instead of a solid click.

I think this is exactly the problem a soft landing, oh well nevermind I'll just replace the selector as planned and keep the original one in a safe place ..i'm just glad it wasn't the pickup....... this is turning into a technical topic
