Crocked Again
Two years ago I was zooming down a mogul field, missed my turn and had a high speed pile-up which resulted in a broken leg, a £1000 bill (covered by insurance) and 6 weeks in plaster and 6 months of rehab. On cold days I can still feel it and the ankle (which was very badly sprained during the break) will probably never be the same.
Last week, 2 hours into a week long ski holiday, I was skiing in zero visibility (stupid I know but I was just trying to get down) when *something* happened, there was a snapping sound and the skiing part of my holiday was over (although the chalet was excellent so the over-eating and drinking part was just starting). I need an MRI to confirm but the doctors in France are pretty sure that I've completely ****ed my ACL. Although it's less of an inconvenience than a break, the recovery is less certain and it's put an end to my wah-wahing for the immediate future. We've got some gigs coming up and I may have to sit to play, like BB King.
I've got my fingers crossed that either it's not a rupture and I'll be able to rehab myself OR I can get an ACL repair before too much of the summer has gone.

Re: Crocked Again
poop.
Knee injuries are always problematic. An ACL tear is common but that doesn't make it any less painful. All the best for a speedy recovery Don!

Do you not sense a pattern here?! Skiing bad, guitar playing good?! Or something...

Don, commiserations, I wish you a speedy recovery. Oddly it makes me want to go skiing.

Re: Crocked Again
ACL damage is bad news, however thankfully it's fully recoverable (gotta have faith).
At least you'll still be able to play sitting down. Get a big grin on your face like BB and the crowd will think it's intentional.

Re: Crocked Again
Thanks guys. I went to the GP yesterday and she'll put me on the waiting list for an MRI scan. If it's going to take months and months then I may have to dip into the GAS fund and go private. In the meantime I'm working on restoring the range of motion on the leg so that I can drive and so on.
The knee is sore without being too painful most of the time, maybe I'm just lucky with a lack of pain receptors in the leg, my broken leg a couple of years ago didn't hurt one little bit. As long as a take a couple of ibuprofen before bed and ice the knee several times during the day, I can keep the discomfort manageable. Tonight I've got the first post-crocking band practice, I'll see how well it goes. Thank goodness these days I'm playing directly through the PA and don't have to cart a 30kg amp around.

Re: Crocked Again
Don, in another post, I've recommended a natural enzymatic product called Wobenzym. I started using in in December because I was getting sharp spike-like pain in my left knee from osteoarthritis.
I was a bit skeptical at first but it took away the pain almost immediately and I've been functioning well to date (almost 4 months) so it has gone well beyond any placebo effect. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is non-toxic with no side effects.
Taking the usual over the counter NSAID's like Ibuprofen, Aleve, Aspirin, et al, is a no-go since they drive up blood pressure and are rough on the stomach.

Re: Crocked Again
Well best wishes for a short recovery time. I had my entire knee and ouad reconstructed including a new ACL so I feel your pain. It is a tough injury but the advances in repair have been substantial over the past few years and the recovery time is much shorter now. Best of luck and hope it all goes well.

Re: Crocked Again
The good news: we had a rehearsal last night and I can play OK sitting down
The bad news: sitting down hasn't made my playing any better
