Shergold Marathon restoration
Ok Fellas, dunno if you lot will be interested but I'll try and document it anyway.
The father-in-law brought this down for me to "have a look at...." in other words, "sort it out free of charge".....bloody tightfisted Scotsman! (apologies to the resident fellows north of the border)
so....
as you can see the neck binding has gone, the frets don't have enough left on them to recrown, despite how they look in the pic.
A refret is a definate, should the zero-fret be the same height as the rest of the frets when finished?
I have the binding here, waiting on the fretwire. in the first pic you can see the frets originally fitted before the binding, but I'm thinking of fretting over the binding, mainly to avoid the pain in the ass of shaping the nubs after the frets are in, what are your thoughts guys?
On the Shergold site there are low stocks of these control plates, but I'm still waiting to be accepted on the forums before I can make enquiries for one, if that falls through it shouldnt be too much of a task to make one...
body has the usual poly finish cracks, more than common with these Shergolds, the body is made from Obeche wood.....yeh...me neither.
Don't want to refinish the body as it tells its own tales, but if he really wants to I guess I can have a pop at it, personally I like it, despite its huge dinks.
There is a short circuit within the pickup, tap it and it comes on...so thats on the cards.
The wiring on these is terrifying, its a stereo output with the switch going between stereo and mono out, the pots are dual stacked affairs...I need to learn some poop here.
thats it for now, I think i need a stiff drink
Happy new year fellas!

Re: Shergold Marathon restoration
My take on zero fret - should be the same height. Its just another fret. Just like playing with a capo on.

Re: Shergold Marathon restoration
I'd string it up and play it first before refretting. It's a bass.
Obviously can't see the worst frets, can we?
If you do decide to fret it make sure you score down each side of the frets prior to removal.
Control plate is a doddle to make.

Yeah thats the first thing I did, even under light finger pressure the strings are touching the board in a couple of places, I tried a very light pass or two with a couple of crowning files and there's not enough left to crown.

Re: Shergold Marathon restoration
Neck relieve?
What's wrong with the strings touching the board as long as the string notes out on the fret.

Re: Shergold Marathon restoration
Sarge
The zero fret should be slightly higher than the first fret, just as the nut slots themselves should be if there was no zero fret.
Good luck with that one!

Thanks Hoax, I was thinking the same, but having no experience with one before I was by no means certain.

Re: Shergold Marathon restoration
not much I guess, except for marking the board itself like a fretless with roundwounds on.Westbone wrote:Neck relieve?

Fret over the binding if that's easier for you, its the normal way surely.

Re: Shergold Marathon restoration
If you do binding first will have to remove a few millimetres from the tangs at the ends. It is a pain in the neck laborious job.
I have never done nibs in the binding, but would probably rather do that than undercutting all the tangs.

Re: Shergold Marathon restoration
Yeah and I'm buggered if I'm spending £60 on a tang nipper.
Yes it's labouring but I need to learn patience, too often I've come undone trying to cut corners.

Re: Shergold Marathon restoration
Do the job properly and nip the tangs off!! buy some cheap end nippers from B&Q and grind the bevel on the jaws flat!!
I feel sure that a bound fretboard should hide the tangs, eh!!
... oh, and tell the owner that he's shelling out some wedge for tools and gear!!

Waay ahead of you John, I've a few pairs of flat end cutters.
Waay ahead of you John, he's been charged for 5m of fretwire already ;-)

Re: Shergold Marathon restoration
Well had a good crack at the neck today.
superglue to attatch the binding, starting at the heel.
stick about 6" at a time, clamping along the way.
Let the scraping begin!.....cought the board a couple times, no big deal as it'll buff out.
3mm jumbo's!
the new 35º/90º file works beautifully.
Almost done.
Took the pickup apart to find the loose connection, sorted that and cleaned the pots and switches' crackles.
This thing sounds amazing, BIG BIG bass! new fender strings give it some zing. I want it

It's not mine to keep unfortunately, although I might try and talk him into a swap for something "better"......
