By "banner" we're talking about the Google Ads at the top of the page. These are generated according to your location, based on your IP address. Sometimes it wanders a bit geographically but the content is generally relevant.

Mine is on target most of the time. Right now it's Music Lessons from a good friend of mine in Town (Milton), plus several ads for guitars and luthiers. That's the good news. The bad news is that many of the ads are for American vendors from as far away as Chicago! Neutral

But there is also another set of "Related Items" that appears sporadically at the bottom left of the page. These are totally random it seems, and often includes porn links. I don't know where that's originating from, but I could live without it.

My number one ad is for a local music shop that specializes in pianos. I decided to see what else they had and, lo and behold, one of the six or so used guitars is an X275 Pantera! Very Happy Price is a tad high, though.

Very strange.
For some strange reason, this forum allows you to link directly to a post notification without first Logging In! That's convenient I suppose but unless you log in that post will display as "new" when you do log in, even if it has already been read.

So here's what's happening:

If I log in first, then attend to the posts, there is nothing shown:
Banner Ads Similartopics-none

But, if I enter the forum in "browse mode" (i.e, not logged in) I see this:
Banner Ads Similartopics-appear

If this has not been purposely installed by a an Admin/Mod then I'm assuming that it has been placed there by a SpamBot of some sort?

I have always seen that set of links when I lurked here before joining. I assumed it to be a feature of the hosting software.

No about this "bin it" lingo..... are you saying use "the old Spanish archer"?? scratch

Damian, that just closes the list for the current session. It does nothing to remove either it, or the plugin that is displaying them in the first place. It'll just reappear next time. Neutral

John, have a look at your Administrator panel for a possible section on "plugins" or something similar. You might find that it has been added there and can be removed.

Just saying how absurd that is! What a weird list that generated somehow. The spammers are an insane bunch, yet don't they base those upon what the person is looking at? But I know that sometimes they don't, because I'd gotten some strange, unrelated, out of the blue ads before. Ads that were in no way related to what I was looking up.

Post by Neil Smith Thu Jul 28, 2011 6:12 am

Hi All,

These are not spam (although they sure are rubbish).

The forum is provided for free by a forum-hosting company. In return for them providing a free forum, they put adverts on the pages. You'll see more if you are not logged in than when you are, but either way that is how they pay for the service.

Also, the adverts are just automatically generated from keywords in the forum posts, which is why you get some pretty random adverts at the bottom of the page - the banner ones are "normally" music related, but not always. If you really care you can learn more here: Adchoices

Long ago I wanted to transfer the forum onto one of my servers, but there is no way to export all the users and comments from this one, and I was never brave enough to suggest that everybody re-writes everything on a new forum!

That is all.

N
