G.A.S. man:

Hi,
I have owned my trans red Thunder I bass since I got it for my 18th birthday back in 1983.
This was a massive step up from my no-name (but relabelled Kill-Craft) precision(ish) copy, which was in turn a massive step up from by very short scale Satellite (with microphonic pickups).
At the time, in the town where I lived (Colchester, Essex, UK), this was one of the very few affordable yet playable instruments available. Youngsters these days are spoilt with their Squiers and Epiphones!
In the band I played the guitarist traded in his nasty Hondo II strat copy for a Thunder IIa and, when she joined, it turned out our lead singer also had a Thunder II guitar. We looked like a bunch of Westone endorsees (but without the cash to go with it).
Until relatively recently this has been my only bass (although admittedly there has been a long hiatus in the middle). Since then I have gained some more. Some I aim to get rid of but the Westone is definitely staying.

This is me with said bass this year

...and this is a better picture of it in the garden with my P bass

Hi All, thought I would say hello. I'm 35 and have been interested in Mats and Westone guitars since I bought a tobacco sunburst Prestige 250 from cash converters in Grimsby about 20 years ago. Been through loads of guitars over the years, including a Thunder 1a, a Rainbow, a few AP2s, Voxs, Westburys. Cut my family down to 3 now but still have the Prestige - it's got a few scars including a reglued neck, that was hideous seeing the neck snap on your favourite guitar :-( Anyway, it's still the nicest guitar I have ever played. Awesome guitars, cool site. Nice going.
Dez, Sheffield.

Hi - I'm new to this forum but am saying hello as I have recently picked up what I think is an early-ish Thunder 1 bass. I've been playing since 1986 and the first bass my parents bought me back then was a Thunder 1 (Bird logo). To my surprise and delight a Thunder 1 appeared locally recently (script logo on headstock) and I knew I had to have it. Fab condition (needed a jack repair and the brass bridge is a bit, well, tarnished) and missing the original knobs - but it's great - even gigged it recently. Let's see if I can upload some photos.......

If anyone can tell me where to get replacement knobs...(currently got shotgun cartridges over rather terrible chrome knobs)

Lastly , from the serial number....does this work out as being from 1982?

Hi fergybass, and welcome.
Yes your instrument would have been made in '82. Please go here for more info on replacement KNOBS.

Hi all.

I bought my first proper guitar in 1984. It was a Thunder 1A and it got seriously gigged around Edinburgh in the late 80s and early 90s In 1999 it was stolen from my flat in Glasgow (along with the double bed and the gas cooker, weegie thieves are nothing if not thorough!). I didn't have an electric for a few years and then picked up a nice semi acoustic (not a Westone) Being a leftie and on a budget there was not much choice around.

Anyhoo last week I saw the twin of my old LH Thunder on flea bay and had to get it! It arrived this morning and I'm as excited as hell.

Body finish looks ok, no major damage but ill need to replace most of the switches and replace two knobs. Have not had a chance to plug it in yet to see what state the electrics are in.

PS if anyone ever picked up a LHooker 1A with a big red number 45 stuck between the pickups it was my old one!

Hi , i'm Mike.I like outdoor pursuits, i want to open an animal sanctuary and travel the world. Sadly i spend far too much time farting around with guitars!

I've had 3 Concords, a 1,2 & 3, plus a Spectrum ST.I currently have Young Chang Squier,a Korean Ibanez SZ320 with SD Alnico Pros and a Thunder 1A

Always thought Westones were the best bang per buck by a country mile.

Great site, thanks.

Hi Summery05 Arcel and welcome from me too!

Your F-13 pictured in this catalogue http://www.cats-eyes.biz/catalogue2/westone2.htm sounds nice!
Very nice video of your fingerstyle playing at seventeen! I understand from the comments your guitar is signed by Sungha Jung ⭐ so you must have met! Very cool, wow! Smile Keep up your wonderful playing! Are you located in the Philippines? Is there a lot of old Westone guitars around in your country?

Hello, My name is Ben Willard, I have been a member for about 2 to 3 weeks now. I just realized I never properly introduced myself. I love guitars and I work on them and play them as much as possible. I am retired, I was a machinest for 35 years and then I was a Xerox tech for about 6 years. I have a Honda Goldwing and me and the wife have been all over the USA with it. I also have a CBR 1000 RR that I love for the technology but at my age cannot use it to it's full potential. I am a ex Marine that is woefully out of shape (: I discovered the wonderful assortment of older Japanese guitars out there about 2 years ago. I enjoy this forum for the knowledge of the members and the class that everyone seems to have here. Glad to be here. Ben.

Hi GtrGeorge!
You'll be hapy to learn that we have our own support group here, MAA (Matsumoku Addicts Anonymous).

Well, we're not really anonymous...and we don't really actually
meet...but we do support each other...in the pursuit of acquiring more
Mats!

Hello to you too Ben.
As you may already know, many here have a bikes and enjoy catching bugs in their teeth.

Also a lot of machinist types here, so you should feel right at home.

Welcome to you both!

Post by RehanMahmood Mon Jul 30, 2012 6:43 pm

Hi everyone. I'm Rehan, 24, currently studying in Glasgow, Scotland. I've had two 80s japanese guitars in the past: a charvel and an aria pro II cs-350 and know about the quality and value of old MIJ guitars. I had to sell all my electric guitars when I moved to UK last year and have only had an acoustic since then. Recently I felt like getting an electric and did some extensive research, played high end instruments at shops and frankly wasn't impressed with the new strats and les pauls compared to their very high prices. Tone wise I'm currently leaning towards the warmer, fatter tone of les pauls but prefer the strat style shapes. I like playing and listening to blues and classic rock and a bit of metal (notably iron maiden) and favourite bands/musicians include: eric clapton, pink floyd, dire straits, ac dc, deep purple, b.b. king, joe bonamassa. Currently very much insipred by bonamassa.

To cut it short, I found out about westone guitars purely by chance last week and also discovered this forum. Looks like there are some nice folks here Smile. I got interested in the thunder after going through the forum and reading reviews. Luckily I found a thunder II-A online at a small store for a good price (comparing it to the price of a thunder I on ebay). Apparently its the 1981 model with the active gain control which I've heard is really good and from the pics it looks to be in good condition. Hopefully I'll get it by the end of this week and then I'll upload pics. Excited to have an electric again.

Sorry if I've written too much Smile

Welcome Rehan,

Glad you joined our gang! Yes they can fetch high prices on ebay but here in Europe they often can be gotten for much less. The Thunder II got raving reviews I never played one but I do have a Thunder III and I like it a lot! But be warned, we all started out with one Westone. What happens after? Can't stop playing them, can't stop thinking about them and before you know it you can't stop writing about them! x390 - Say hello... - Page 12 2609248800 Smile

Can't wait to see the pics, please take 'm outside!

Hi - I am new here, my first post. I have bought a westone spectrum LX in black - its in pretty good/excellent condition too. I bought it because I am a big fan a spectrum LX player Dave Brock. Hope you can answer some questions:

- I paid £100 sterling for it, was this a fair price?
- what the hell do the switch and knobs do??? I have given it a sample of my rather average playing and it seems to have a wide range of tones

One thing immediately noticeable - its built like a tank and weighs a fair bit!

Welcome WestoneJon. Sounds like you paid about the right amount to me and you'll not be disappointed. The Spectrums are big favourites of a lot of us here.

Check this LINK on our web site for more info on the LX.

Post by corsair Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:30 pm

yep; I reckon 100 quid is a bargain for a guiatr like the LX; good work!

Knob closest to the strings is the volume, pulls up to split the coils and give a quasi-single coil sound, Middle knob is a tone with a pull pot to switch the middle p'up on and the far away knob is the tone for the bridge p'up with a pull function to reverse the phase of the humbuckers.

You're right, of course; these things do have a dizzying array of tones but, to be fair, not all of them are nice, or even useful!! However, the Specs are my favourites and my LX is the metallic black one with black fittings; great for hard core rock!! Very Happy

You gonna show us what you've got there??

Hello, I'm David, and I play in a band called Aphrodite, based in the North West of England. I own a left-handed 1985 Spectrum SX in black. I've had it since new, and have used it on and off since then. It's not my main stage guitar any more, but it still travels everywhere with me as a back-up guitar. I've been advised many. many times to replace it with something more modern/'pro', but I just can't let it go- it's like a piece of me!

It's with a guitar repairer right now, as I've finally got round to making some mods I've been intending to do for years... it's getting a fret dress and 3 replacement pickups: a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, and 2 Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pros in the middle and neck. It's a bit of an experiment (expensive if it doesn't work out- but if it goes well it may be seeing some action soon!) but I really love the guitar, it's been incredibly reliable and it plays and feels great- a much better guitar than you have any right to expect at the price, and to still work perfectly after 27 years, so I'm keeping faith with it. Plus, I guess we lefties instinctively know when a guitar's a keeper, as guitars don't come as easy to us...!

I've just discovered this forum today and it's great, so hello to all Westone players everywhere!

Back atcha 45Bodie!

The Spectrum has a way of attaching itself to you eh? They're great guitars, but if you were "blessed" with those dreadful UBC pickups, no one here will blame you for replacing them. Just today I finally replaced the ones in my Spectrum S. That makes 3 of mine so adjusted.

Do a search here on UBC (unbalanced coil) for discussions, and you can read about them on our web site: LINK

I still reckon that at stage volumes and with the kind of FX that everyone uses now, you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between the UBCs and the 45s..

... christ, even compression will warp the sound and then in goes the reverb, echo and distortion... EQ, phase, octave shift, chorus...

However, I will concede that on the bench, the UBCs are indeed a little wimpy on the scream-o-meter...

Maybe, but "pushed" is the operative word. I had to crank it through a 100 watt Roland with reverb and overdrive, to get anything like usable. By contrast, the GFS Crunchy blows me out of the room through my 5 watt VOX, on clean!

Welcome to the madhouse David, you don't have to be crazy to visit here but it helps!
Most of the regulars here have superb knowledge and insight into all things Westone....and more besides! Stick around and drink in the atmosphere, it's a barrel of laughs!

I'm with corsair regarding the UBC's, sure they aren't super loud, but they have a nice clean tone and in my spectrum ST, when tapped, they were bright and airy, a pleasure to play, saying that I did replace them with mmk45's for a little extra umph!

Hello
please allow me to introduce myself..
My name is Kees, 36 years, I live in Rotterdam.
For a living I'm a service engineer, concerning oil and gas sampling/ measurements.
My first guitar was a chinese strat type which I bought in app 1990.
When I found out is was just a crappy woodfibre-board, I got rid of it and bought me a Aria ProII, which I still have.
Besides that I had a Vantage (lookalike Ibanez JS), a Blade R4 (old one)
and until now a Gibson LP studio (Cherry, Ebony fretboard)..
But then I ran in to a Villain Graphite metallic Grey, which brought me here for more information..
To find out this is an interesting place of people enthusiast about their instruments.
Questions will follow on the other side.

If there are some questions about gear or tube amps.. feel free,
maybe there is some knowledge to share!

Welcome Kees,

I have no experience with the Villain at all nor with refretting or this particular model! I haven't seen a lot of Villain owners posting either.
Graphite necks were a new invention back in the days, and quite rare today. Did you do a search on Bond guitars? I think they started out with graphite necks.
Good luck!

Hi everyone.
My name is Tony and I live in Lancashire.

During a recent loft clearout / tidy up I found a 1984 Thunder IA in bits in the loft, a project started by my son about seven years ago and given up on shortly after.

I didn't know what the guitar was but noticed the "made in Japan" on the neck plate. Intrigued I Searched the web and found the Westone website and consequently found this forum which I have been reading avidly for a few days now.

Reading all the posts has really impressed me with the amount of knowledge shared freely on the forum and the obvious affection you all have for these guitars.

So I have decided to restore the guitar as best I can with the parts remaining. Unfortunately there are some parts missing ie the active pre-amp and back recess cover, but hopefully I will still be able to restore it to a non active version.

For anyone who may be interested my other instruments are: Fender American Deluxe Strat, Fender American Standard Telecaster, Fender Modern Player Telecaster Plus, PRS Custom 24, PRS SE Bernie Marsden Signature, Ibanez RT650, Taylor 314C acoustic.

Ha ha, Iceman is refering to a video I posted in another thread where the actor Michiel Romeyn of Jiskefet pretends to play a Concord and some other huge guitar. I know there's other Dutch members posting now and then. A lot of Westones sold well in the eighties in the Netherlands I think.

Post by King of the Stuntmen Sun Sep 16, 2012 7:36 pm

Never spent any time on this particular forum, though I have owned a few Mat's over the years.

My dad called me from a local car boot sale today to let me know he'd found this -

x390 - Say hello... - Page 12 DSC_0274

x390 - Say hello... - Page 12 DSC_0277

x390 - Say hello... - Page 12 DSC_0273

Now, she has a few issues; potentially serious fretwear all over the neck (especially in the lower third of the 'board), what looks like a missing pot, mismatched knobs and a missing switch tip.

I've since had a quick look under the plate and I'm wondering if someone has drilled an extra hole and moved all the controls 'along one'...?

I'll know more when I string her up...

Hi everybody,what a lovely site.

I used to play on and off into my mid thirties, but now find myself that bit older and i just know i'd get a lot of enjoyment by just having a nice little leccy lying around.

I've owned a few models in the past, teles, strats, SGs....but the one that sticks in my mind was my first ever guitar..a humble old thunder jet. That guitar was a revelation compared to some of the guitars my mates had bought at a similar time..encores and such which really were abysmal..yet that jet, looking back was the one that sticks out over every guitar i've owned.

So I have a bit of money put aside, and have my heart set on a 1,1a,3 or 3a. I'm going to bide my time to wait for the right one to show up..a week, a couple of month. I think it's worth waiting for the right one rather than just jumping on the first one i see. I have an old pod kidney bean tucked away, and as the guitar will just be for personal home use I'm hoping to get a nice little set up which will put a beaming smile on my face lol.

Anyway...Kev here from the NW of England..a big hello to one and all.

Format taken from the first post :

Name - Nick

Age - over 40

Location - Bradford

First guitar - SG copy

First Westone - Raider I

Later Westones - Raider I - Only one (but slightly modified)

Modded in the early 90's with a Khaler floating trem and a Steve Vai DiMarzio Pink Pickup. Recently just sanded the neck slightly to get rid oin the tackyness built up over the years.

It's stood the test of time pretty well.

Can't post a pic for 7 days, but if you search for Bone_idle18 on flickr, it should be there Very Happy
